The Song of Your Life. 8.68 m x 2.13 m. Marker on wall.
Interim Show City & Guilds of London Art School May 2021
The Song of Your Life was completed over the span of two days in a joyful, improvisational burst, as if performing a piece of music live. I burst into "pictorial singing" like this after a long process of distilling poetic impressions into potent expressions, and training certain capabilities in my art practice. Japanese calligraphy hones my line and brushwork, a discipline analogous to working a particular note or passage of a piece of music over and over again until it can be played with fluidity. My attunement to musical dynamics and rhythm lend themselves to distinct sections that are deliberately "played" louder or softer, gentler or more intense than others. The piece is not meant to be read as a visual representation of a specific musical notation, but rather as an orchestral coalescing: colors like different melodic lines, each having their own unique rhythm and instrumentality, but all working together in a symphonic-like harmony.
